Stressful situations are, more often than not, something that is completely out of our control. Getting stuck in traffic jams, work deadlines, moving house, the sound of your alarm clock, rain on your wedding day, Christmas shopping, the list could go on and on! The reality of these situations is there isn’t a whole lot you can do about them.

However, what is totally within your control when it comes to these situations, is your reaction. Evolution has cleverly designed our bodies to react appropriately to stress. When we were being hunted by prey or faced with a life-threatening situation, our body would be flooded with adrenaline, our heart rate would increase and our breathing would quicken. All of these reactions were entirely appropriate for those physically demanding circumstances that occurred on a rare and sporadic basis. But what happens when you are sitting at your desk and you’ve sent an email to the wrong person? Or you’re faced with standing up and speaking in front of a group of people? Or just an endless stream of deadlines? We’ve all been there. In these moments, you probably felt your heart rate jump up, and your fingers tingle with adrenaline. This reaction was designed to be used in emergency situations, but with life evolving faster than our bodies, we are using our natural resources far too often, and faster than we can replenish them.

natural remedies for stress

How does Ayurveda explain stress?

Stress in Ayurveda is all about the delicate balance between your three vital energies, also known as doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. However, keeping this balance is all about fine tuning, kind of like trying to find the perfect signal on your radio. Examples of this would be staying warm, which helps your Vata dosha stay balanced, staying hydrated helps your Pitta dosha stay balanced and avoiding eating rice every day helps your Kapha dosha stay balanced.

However, unlike fine tuning your radio, balancing your doshas can be quite an enjoyable experience. As well as tackling your stressor head on, such as communicating and making lists, there are some natural remedies for stress that are a pleasure to incorporate into your daily routine.
