As the heat rises and we transition into Summer 2022 after a long winter, we are reminded of the joy of reconnecting with friends and family, and enjoying the beauty of mother nature. The summer season is ruled by the pitta dosha. Composed of the elements fire and water, pitta is oily, hot, light, spreading and liquid. This time of year can express in the body as agitation, low digestive fire, high acidity, and skin irritations. You may notice an imbalance of pitta can manifest in your skin by becoming irritated with dryness or excessive oiliness, rashes, insect bites and, of course, getting sunburnt. To maintain that summer glow despite the humidity this pitta season, the key is to keep the inflammation externally and internally down, by using Ayurvedic tools and wisdom such as eating cool foods and reducing stress mentally and physically. Listen to your body and follow our top 5 tips below to help eliminate toxins, balance digestion, calm inflamed, sensitive skin and pacify a fiery mood and nervous tension.

Summer Tip 1: Breathe Better

Keep cool and calm by avoiding overexposure to direct sunlight and hot, spicy foods. Regular yoga practice, followed by pranayama breathing will help release negativity. Meditation, massage and gardening are ideal rituals to encourage a loving, compassionate attitude for self and others.

Set up a calming, meditative atmosphere with our At Home Yoga Kit.
Tip: To be in flow means accepting all parts of our being – the feminine and the masculine. When we do alternate breathing exercises, we are breathing in that divine feminine and masculine energy, or put another way, the energy of the moon and sun, of the creative and the analytical. The sun is all-powerful, penetrating, sharp, focused (much like pitta season) and the moon is deep, calm, quiet and all-knowing.

Summer Tip 2: Balance Your Agni

Summer exacerbates the pitta dosha, so it’s important to eat foods that are the opposite of fiery pitta—think sweet, bitter, astringent, cold, and even a little oily. Staying away from spicy food, having your meals in regular intervals and calming exercises will all also help to manage pitta imbalances from the inside out. Stick to an abundance of fresh, green salads, vegetables, sweet fruits and sipping cool water and mint infusions throughout the day will help restore balance.

You will also benefit from rejuvenating supplements to calm the mind, reduce acidity in the digestion and soothe inflamed skin.
Keep your insides clean. Ama or toxins in your gut can cause problematic skin. Prevent this by taking Organic Triphala Booster to help regulate digestive function and to clean the small intestine and colon.  Or try our Transform and Transcend Alchemy blend, which contains amla, one of the world’s most powerful antioxidants, alma has 20 times more concentrated vitamin C than an orange and infuses your body with nutrition that protects against environmental aggressors that we experience during the summer months.

Summer Tip 3: Protect And Hydrate.

In the heat of summer, a healthy and hydrated skin barrier is vital. Throughout the season make sure you drink plenty of water. Accompanied by keeping your insides hydrated, it is key to maintain hydration on your face with a good hydrating skincare ritual. The summer months make your skin prone to sun spots, dehydration, and dullness if not properly protected. So of course, put your favourite natural sunscreen on after using hydrating products like our Supreme Skin Serum and Supreme Skin Rose Mist to help keep your body cool, thus reducing inflammation in the body.

To help you stay hydrated throughout the day, spray a few pumps of our Supreme Skin Rose Mist, enhanced with skin-plumping hyaluronic acid; anchored in steam distilled rose water to hydrate, tone and nourish pitta imbalances in the skin, bringing a glow to dull and dehydrated skin while also acting as a super sensory 'pick-me-up' throughout the day.

Summer Tip 4: Soothe Skin

If you are pitta dominant or in pitta season, skin tends to be irritable with a tendency towards rashes or acne. More time enjoyed outside also means extra exposure to environmental aggressors like UV, pollution and most likely a little more sunburn. End your day out in the sun with soothing rituals that aim to cool your body down and balance the environmental stressors that you have encountered in the day.

After your night-time skincare ritual, a highly effective skin-soothing therapy to balance your skin in Pitta season is our Agni Radiance Concentrate. It is most effective during the summer months when skin tends to be more inflamed as it contains healing Co2 extracts of Neem and Gotu Kola, repair and soothe skin tissue, whilst a rejuvenating base of organic Moringa, Tamanu and Jojoba combined to speed up cell renewal from the wear and tear of the day.

End the night with a soothing self-massage, or in Ayurveda- abhyanga. With a Pitta imbalance, your body can feel achy, stressed and tired, so choose oils that will be calming and tissue-healing. Our Serenity Pitta Massage Body Oil is an excellent choice if you have a little more heat in your system and would like to keep pitta balanced or would like cooling support during the summer season. It combines herbs like Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, Lavender and  Rose Absolute to cool, soothe skin, and relax the body and mind. Serenity helps to pacify a fiery mood, strengthen joints and soothe inflamed skin.

Summer Tip 5: Clear Out Congestion

Ensuring pores are properly cleared of excess sunscreen or sweat build-up keeps unwanted skin issues, like breakouts, at bay. Drinking tea daily can be a perfect way to purify the blood, to help with lymphatic drainage and to keep clear any unwanted excess from the body. Choose a refreshing herbal infusion with skin detoxing herbs like nana mint leaves, roasted chicory root and cactus blossoms, which combine to help pacify inflamed skin, emotional outbursts and digestive imbalances.
