Far more than a simple scalp massage, champi is a centuries-old Ayurvedic practice designed to nourish the scalp, encourage healthy hair growth, calm the nervous system and restore balance to both body and mind.
The beauty of champi is that you don't need a spa appointment to experience its benefits. With the right oil, a few simple techniques and just a little time each week, you can enjoy this restorative ritual from the comfort of your own home.
Here's everything you need to know.
What is a Champi Massage?
A champi massage is a traditional Indian head massage that combines warm herbal oils with rhythmic massage techniques to nourish the scalp, improve circulation and encourage healthy hair.
In Ayurveda, healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. Rather than treating the hair alone, champi works holistically by supporting the scalp, easing muscular tension and helping calm an overactive mind.
Today, modern research continues to explore how scalp massage may support circulation, reduce stress and improve hair thickness over time, making champi as relevant now as it was thousands of years ago.
What You'll Need
To recreate an authentic champi massage ritual at home, we recommend:
- Grow Strong Hair Oil – a potent blend of Ayurvedic botanicals including Bhringraj, Amla and Black Seed Oil to nourish the scalp and strengthen hair.
- Kansa Comb or Kansa Scalp Stimulator – you can always use your hands for a champi massage, but adding in a tool can make the ritual more effortlessly effective. These are designed to gently stimulate the scalp, encourage circulation and evenly distribute oil through the hair.
- Hair Growth Stimulating Duo – or buy together and save 10%. This duo contains both the Hair Oil and the Scalp Tool which is all you will ever need for an effective champi massage. More results, less money.

How to Do Champi: Step-by-Step
Step 1: Warm Your Hair Oil
Pour a small amount of Grow Strong Hair Oil into hands and gently warm between your palms.
In Ayurveda, warming the oil helps improve absorption while making the ritual feel deeply soothing.
Step 2: Section Your Hair
Using your fingers or a comb, divide your hair into manageable sections.
Apply a few drops of oil directly onto each section of the scalp before gently massaging it in with your fingertips.
The goal is to nourish the scalp first, rather than coating the lengths of the hair.
Step 3: Stimulate Key Marma Points
Ayurveda identifies marma points as vital energy centres throughout the body.
Several important marma points are located on the scalp and around the temples.
Using gentle pressure:
- Press into the centre of the crown.
- Massage behind the ears.
- Circle around the temples.
- Massage the base of the skull where neck tension often accumulates.
Pause for several slow breaths at each point.
Step 4: Massage the Scalp
Using the pads of your fingers (not your nails), begin massaging in slow circular motions.
Work methodically across the scalp. Pay particular attention to areas that feel tight or tender.
Spend around 5–10 minutes gently stimulating the entire scalp.
This massage helps encourage circulation while relaxing the muscles surrounding the head and neck.
Step 5: Use Your Kansa Comb
Next, glide your Kansa Comb slowly through the hair.
Begin at the front hairline and work towards the nape of the neck.
The comb helps:
- Evenly distribute the nourishing oils
- Stimulate the scalp
- Work the marma points (the kansa metal behaves as a magnet across these vital energy points)
- Transform the ritual into a wonderfully calming sensory experience
Repeat each stroke several times, allowing the weight of the comb to do the work.
Step 6: Leave the Oil to Work
For best results, leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes.
If time allows, leave it on for several hours or even overnight.
This gives the botanical oils time to deeply nourish both the scalp and hair.
Step 7: Wash and Condition
Cleanse thoroughly using the Grow Strong Shampoo & Conditioner.
Our Grow Strong Shampoo gently removes excess oil without hair-stripping ingredients like SLS, while the conditioner leaves hair feeling soft, smooth and beautifully nourished without any silicones in sight.
You may wish to shampoo twice if you've left the treatment on overnight.
How Often Should You Do Champi?
For most people, one to two treatments per week is ideal.
Regular practice can help:
- Support a healthy scalp
- Improve the appearance of stronger, shinier hair
- Relieve stress and tension
- Encourage relaxation before sleep
- Turn haircare into a mindful wellbeing ritual
Consistency is far more important than intensity. Even a short weekly ritual can become something your scalp (and your nervous system) looks forward to.
