We all want greater health and vitality but in being ambitious with our goals, we set ourselves up for a fall. The good news is, all it takes is small, easy, everyday rituals to achieve sustainable success. By turning rituals into habits, we change our patterns and this creates success and good health. Here we start with three quick and easy ayurvedic wellbeing rituals. Just pick the one that resonates and see if you can build it into your day.
ADD GHEE IN YOUR DIET: Ghee is a purified butter traditionally used in Indian cooking. My mother used ghee liberally and as a teenager I would wince, as I saw only the fat and none of the incredible nutrition. I later learnt that not all fats are equal and indeed ghee is deeply nourishing to all the tissues of the body, organs and brain. Eating a spoon of ghee prior to each meal not only delivers vital energy but as importantly helps lubricate the food canal and aid digestion for optimal functioning and the byproduct is skin, hair and body that glows with health and vitality.
GIVE YOUR TONGUE A GOOD SCRAPE: Ayurveda is very much about prevention and by paying attention to your tongue each morning, you can learn much about the state of your internal organs. A pink tongue is a sign your organs are in good health and you have a clear digestive tract. If you have undigested food, clogged organs and toxic overload, it will show up on your tongue as a yellowish fuzz, with scales and perhaps even bumps. Once you have made this easy self-diagnosis, seek out an Ayurvedic practitioner for further advice on the best detoxing method for your body type and include ghee in your diet as mentioned above. Next, and importantly make sure you clean your tongue with a metal scraper to avoid re-ingesting the toxins back into your system but be sure you don't scrape your tongue raw red. Work from back to front and aim for 6 to 12 strokes for a cleaner, healthier mouth and body, which again, leads to glowing skin and senses.
MASSAGE FROM TIP TO TOE: My grandmother was a midwife and she would teach new mothers in her village the value of daily massage in building strong, healthy bones and an alert mind and this tender ritual is one that babies take into adulthood and old age. The Vedas prescribe massage as a vital part of detoxification, rejuvenation and nourishment for mind and body and indeed, this short daily ritual helps relieve mental fatigue, enhance clarity, balance emotions and strengthen hair, skin and scalp.
